How-To: GM 10 / 12 Bolt REBUILD
Alright, so this 1 HOUR 30 MINUTE video will show you how to rebuild a GM passenger car 10 & 12 bolt rear end. And yes, not only do I work on motorcycles, but cars as well.
I have owned my 70′ Chevelle since 2005, and really haven’t touched it in a few years. I’m really itching to do a motor/trans swap, and that all can’t happen until a upgrade the 8.2 peg leg 10 bolt with 2.73 gears.
So I bought a core 2.73 non-posi 12 bolt, and decided to rebuilt it with a new posi, gears, and axles. Also added a 1350 forged yoke, TA rear cover, and had ford housing ends welded on, to try and make it as strong as possible.

Along with the video, below are some of the tools and parts needed to get the job done.
Tool List
HF 20 Ton Press – A press is required to press the pinion bearing on/off. Since ring & pinion set up is a trial and error process, you will be removing/installing the bearing several times.
OTC 1130 bearing splitter – This tool is useful to get under the pinion bearing for removal with press.
Harmonic balancer puller – Used to remove stubborn pinion yokes.
Dial indicator with magnetic base – For checking backlash.
Bleepin Jeep yoke holder – The beefiest yoke holder with provisions to use a cheap 3/4″ black pipe for leverage.
30″ breaker bar – To crush that pinion sleeve.
1-1/8″ impact socket – Pinion nut size
IN-LB dial torque wrench – Needed for setting pinion and carrier bearing preload.
Axle bearing puller – Also can be rented from auto parts store.h
Bearing race driver – Also can be rented from auto parts store.
3/4″ black pipe 36″L – Use with Bleepin Jeep yoke holder.
Pen magnet – For removing c-clips.
Prybar/crowbar – To remove carrier.
Center punch – Mark the caps before removing them.
Kroil – This stuff is expensive.
BOA strap wrench – For holding the carrier.
Part List
Eaton posi 19554-010 – For 3.08 to 3.90 gears.
Motive gears 3.73 – Go with whatever ratio you want.
Moser axles c-clip style – I went with custom axles for Ford ends.
1350 forged yoke – Stock is 1330.
1330 to 1350 u-joint conversion
TA cover – This cover preloads the carrier caps slightly to improve strength.
ARP ring gear bolts – These are longer and stronger than what comes in most kits.
