Product Review: The Two Stroke Dirt Bike Engine Building Handbook

If you own a 2 stroke, then I want to tell you about an awesome new book that will help you tackle your first engine rebuild. Actually, even if you have rebuilt an engine or two, this book is will teach you some valuable building techniques.

Paul Olesen from DIY Moto Fix wrote this book, and is over 280+ pages long. It also has over 300 color illustrations. It is available in both paperback and ebook (.pdf) formats.

What does this book do?

To summarize what this book does in one word: process. Engine building is a process, and this book walks you through and teaches you procedures from A to Z.

Will I still need my service manual for my model?

YES! This book does not replace your service manual, which you will need for toque specs and other information. However, when was the last time you saw a service manual with color images? Or does the service manual ever explain WHY or HOW something failed? Nope. This book is simply another resource to use in conjunction with the service manual to better prepare you for rebuilding your engine.

Rebuild FAQ

For the first timer, a 2 stroke engine rebuild can take you about 8+ hours. If you take it to a shop, expect to pay $450-700 labor, depending if engine is in frame or not. So you can see the potential savings if you tackle a job like this yourself. I guarantee after you complete your first rebuild you’ll say “That wasn’t so bad”.

Where do I get a copy of the book?

Remember, this book is available in paperback and ebook formats. You can buy them separate, or bundle them together. Paul also has a 4 stroke rebuild book that I reviewed some time ago, and you can also bundle both 4T & 2T books together.

  1. Mathew, I have had a hard drive failure on my PC and have lost the link I saved for my online manual.
