How-To: KX250 Steahly Flywheel Weight Installation
Year, Make, Model
In this video, I show you how to install a Steahly flywheel weight (FWW) on a 2001 Kawasaki KX250. Enter “KX250” in the search bar up top to see all the videos & posts for this KX250 (I have on ton on this model).
Why Install a Flywheel Weight?
A FWW should make the bike easier to ride by smoothing out the power delivery. Here are other benefits of adding a FWW:
- Does not rob horsepower, RPM build more slowly instead.
- Bike will be easier to control in slippery conditions.
- You will be able to lug the motor at a low RPM.
- Easier to kickstart.
So having said all of the above, I was really looking to “tame the hit” of my KX250. The track I usually ride at is slippery when too wet & dry, making it difficult for me coming out of corners. I was hoping to smooth out the power delivery & gain more traction. I didn’t notice a huge difference at mid to high RPM’s, while I noticed a big difference at low RPM’s putting around in the pits. I was able to lug the motor at a very low RPM and it pulled like a tractor!
Tools
I made my own piston stop from an old spark plug and some delrin rod. Or you can buy one from Amazon:
Parts
Here is the 11oz weight I bought used for ~$50 from Thumpertalk classified.
MSR is another company that makes FWW for the KX, and is available from Amazon.
