How-To: KX250F Oil Change
Year, Make, Model
2006 Kawasaki KX250F
Preventative Maintenance
Changing your motorcycle oil is probably the easiest and most important part of scheduled maintenance. I encourage people to change their 4 stroke MX oil & filter every 4-6hrs, or every other ride. (Other easy important maintenance includes cleaning your air filter and adjusting your valves).
Tools
No special tools required. Refer to video below for basic hand tools used.
Parts List & Cost
You have a couple of options as far as the oil filter is concerned. You can buy an inexpensive “throw away” paper style or a reusable stainless steel (SS) version. You’ll have the additional work of thoroughly cleaning the SS version, however will pay for itself in 6 or so oil changes. You can click on the image for more info and pricing.
I personally like using Honda GN4 10W-40 for most of these MX bikes. It is available in quart and gallon sizes as well. I buy in gallon sizes to save some money since I go through quite a bit of oil.
Oil Capacity and Oil Puking Out Breather Tube
Oil capacity when filter is not removed: 1.4 US qt.
Oil capacity when filter is removed: 1.43 US qt.
Oil capacity when engine is completely dry: 1.6 US qt.
After the oil change, I noticed that some oil has puked out the breather tube while taking a test spin. It seems like other owners have experienced this at some point as well. After several start/run cycles, I kept noting the oil level and added if necessary. I wouldn’t be too concerned, as the problem seems to go away rather quickly.

I thought I would mention that full engine rebuild videos for this same bike are located here.
