The Project
The restoration on this dirt bike was performed by Vintage Husky in 2011. Although it was originally made to run around in the dirt, there are products that will make it street legal. In this post & video, I’ll go over how to do exactly that. In order to become street legal, a headlight, taillight/brake light, & plate holder will have to be installed.
The factory Motoplat ignition system was not equipped with a lighting coil to provide power for auxiliary lighting. There is a service available that can add a 40W coil to the stator, however if you are looking for bright lighting, you’ll probably have to go the LED route. If you choose to go the LED route & stator rewind, contact me and I can forward you the contact.
I found out that Penton Racing manufactures an electronic ignition system with 80-100W 12v lighting capability! The lighting is AC regulated and a battery is not required. Perfect!
The headlight & tail/brake light were purchased from Baja Designs:
Single-LaPaz 8 inch Halogen Race Light
Tires
The knobby tires were replaced for a dual spot tire more suited for street use:
K761 Dual Sport 110/80H-18 Rear Tire
K761 Dual Sport 90/90P-21 Front Tire
Gearing
Since the dual sport tire diameter ended up slightly smaller than the knobby, and speeds will be higher on the street versus dirt, the front sprocket was swapped out for one that is one tooth larger for more top end. The design of the rear sprocket/hub will not allow a smaller sprocket to be installed.
Here is a good resource for calculating sprocket gearing changes and how many chain links you will have to add or remove:
Installation Video
After Pictures
Hi,
I’m interested in installing lighting on my husky to do a cross county trans America trial ride. I came across a thread on cafe Husky and I was wondering if you still had the installation video anywhere? If so I would love to take a look and see how you were able to set up the bike with a 12v lighting system. Thank you so much
