How-To: Makita 9227C Grinding Noise Fix
Remember the post “tools that Santa brought me 2014”? Well, I wanted to share what I found was making that awful grinding noise on the Makita 9227C polisher.
Now, I initially thought it was the spindle bearing, as it did feel a bit “notchy”, however that was not the problem. Luckily, I work a few blocks away from the Makita service center, so I just asked the guys to take look at the internals, and they immediately said to replace the bevel gear.
Good thing I did take the entire housing apart, since there were a ton of wool bonnet fibers that got sucked in and completely clogged the cooling passages for the motor!
Parts
Here is a link to an exploded diagram for the 9227c. The bevel gear PN is 226744-6.
Removing/Pressing The Bevel Gear On
The entire assembly relies on the spindle shaft pressed onto the bevel gear. Everything else is a slip fit. I recommend using a hydraulic press, and yes it takes quite a bit of force. Make sure you support the housing correctly, as I outlined in the video.
Lubricant
Here is a link to the autobody forum I came across about thinning some wheel bearing grease with gear lube to a “cool honey”. Wheel bearing hubs are typically packed ⅔ full, so I decided to do the same for this gearbox housing.

Cord Plug Replacement
Due to polishers developing static electricity, I want to replace the plug to have a proper grounding plug. The damaged plug was easily replaced.

So Was It Worth It To Buy Used?
Good question. I try to save money on tools that I won’t use often, however still want high quality products. After all the time and money I spent repairing this unit, I probably could have just bought a new one. Then again, I would have learned nothing, and I”m OK with that! Click the link below to see what a new one costs, not cheap by any means!
