Tools Santa brought me – Xmas 2014
Santa brought me some new tools for Christmas! Others were gifts from grab bags, and the rest I bought for myself. Most of these are for my Z50 project I purchased.
Here is a quick description of each tool and why I need it. I’ll have videos on How-To use them and/or reviews in the future. I’ll start on the left and work to the right of the picture.
Tusk Valve Spring Compressor – This tools allows you to disassemble the valves, springs, retainers, and keepers from your cylinder head. I have borrowed this tool from a friend in the past and it worked great. I plan to use this for the Z50 engine, where I will inspect and hopefully just get away with lapping the valves.
Lisle 21200 valve lapper tool & Permatex 80037 vavle lapping/grinding coumpound – Once I use the tool above to remove the intake and exhaust valves, I hope they just need to be lapped. I do own the Lisle 21100, but it is much too large for the Z50 valves.
Vessel Megadora 980 Impacta Screwdrivers (P2x150 & P3x150) – I’m pretty excited about these new screwdrivers. First off, they work with Japenese JIS & US Phillips. The “+” screws on Jap bikes are usually all JIS, which is slightly different than the US Phillips. Phillips screwdrivers usually cam out on JIS screws, and that is why I see so many stripped screws on the bikes I work on. I’ll put together a post on JIS vs Phillips at a later time. Also, these screwdrivers are impact drivers! If you have a stubborn fastener, you don’t have to go reach and setup your impact driver, all you have to do is reach for a hammer and use the tool that is already in your hand. Sweet!
Boa Strap Wrench – This strap wrench will help hold clutch baskets & flywheels while tightening. I plan to use it for the Z50 project.
Makita 9227C Polisher/Sander – I bought this one used on Ebay. It does have a noise issue that I will have to address. I’ve always wanted to become better at buffing/polishing paint. I did one boat last summer and would like to do my vehicles this year. I have a beater car that I plan to practice on. Also, I hear that when converted to a sander, it strips paint pretty quickly.
Tusk Bearing Puller – (pictured at top) When you split cases and remove the crank, sometimes the main bearings stay on the crankshaft, and this tool will remove them with ease. I wish I had this when rebuilding the KX250F.
