How-To: Motorcycle Carburetor Clean Honda XR70R
Year, Make, Model
The bike in this video is a 1999 Honda XR70R. This will also cover all 1997 thru 2003 models.
Also, if you own a different model Honda, or a Chinese knock off with a carburetor that resembles the one in the images shown, then this video will help get your engine up and running by cleaning the carburetor.
Symptoms
Here are some symptoms indicating you most likely have a dirty carburetor that needs to be cleaned:
- Will not start
- Will only run on starting fluid
- Will only run or runs better with choke on (or choke partially on)
- Spitting through the carb
- Has been sitting for a while and fuel went stale, which gums up the carb
- It’s been years since carburetor was serviced (they all eventually will have to be cleaned at some point)
Aftermarket Modifications
I want to mention that this XR70 has an aftermarket pod air filter versus the stock air cleaner assembly. The aftermarket pod does flow more air and will require richer jetting. I will have follow up videos on how to tune the needle and main jets to compensate for more air flow. Before jetting can begin, we have to start with a clean carburetor and verify the current jetting in carburetor and compare to stock specifications listed in service manual.
Diagnosis
Due to the aftermarket foam air flter pod, the carburetor needs to be rejetted. However, before we begin, we need to start with known jetting and a clean carburetor.
The carburetor was a bit dirty, especially some crusty stuff located at the bottom of the fuel bowl.
Parts List
Most of the time, you can get away without replacing any parts at all. In this case, I went ahead and replaced all rubber o-rings and float gasket. Sometimes the float needle is worn and will need to be replaced. If you need any parts, shop Rocky MTN (affiliate link) for good deals on OEM parts.

I have a similar problem with my sons xr70r first gear is ok 2nd falls on its face. Finger over the airbox it revs normal, or I can roll into it. Idles great starts first kick, needle changes dont affect the bog, Is this caused by a lean main jet?
Hi David,
Are there any modifications to this XR? Pod or exhaust?
Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
What is your air screw set at?
Matt
the spark arrester was removed from the muffler before I bought it.
have not checked for vacuum leaks, What is the best way on a little bike like this?
air screw is around 1.5 turns out after the idle drop procedure in the manual. If I turn the air screw in it will mask the stumble but not be near peak idle rpm.
Use carb cleaner around the intake joints. Here is a video: https://howtomotorcyclerepair.com/how-to-diagnose-motorcycle-vaccum-leaks/
Is your carburetor clean? Have you ever taken it apart?
